From solar energy to home heat

The Anna P1 from Plugwise is the world’s first thermostat that connects directly with your smart meter. This unique design eliminates the need for additional hardware and gives you full control over your energy consumption. This way you can not only save on your energy bill, but also contribute to a more sustainable world.

Use your solar energy to the fullest

The Anna P1 allows you to harness generated solar energy directly in your home. Instead of delivering energy back to the grid, the thermostat cleverly harnesses excess energy to heat your home or charge a thermal battery (hot water tank). This smart pairing increases your self-consumption, lowers your energy costs and makes you less dependent on the energy grid. Thus, you utilize more of your free energy and actively contribute to a better environment.

Your energy, your rules.

How it works is simple: you determine a starter and a corresponding action.

  • Starter: This is a situation where Anna needs to react, such as when your solar panels generate more electricity than you use and start feeding it back to the grid.
  • Action: What happens next is up to you. For example, you can:
    • Adjusting the temperature in the house.
    • Activate a specific scene (for example, “Home” or “Away”).
    • Adjusting the hot water temperature.
    • Enable or disable your hot water comfort mode.
    • For Thercon Therma: Activating the Boost mode

An example: Suppose your solar panels deliver excess electricity back to the grid(starter), then Anna can automatically raise the temperature in your home(action). This way you make the best use of your self-generated energy and keep everything completely in your own hands.

One small job, one big difference

Once installed, the Anna P1 makes your life easier, but we admit: there is one small point of interest. The Anna P1 consists of two parts: the display Anna, which you use as your thermostat, and the gateway Smile-T P1. The gateway connects with a fixed 0.9-meter cable to your smart meter in the meter box.

And here comes the challenge: the display Anna works with a wire connection to the gateway. But in many homes, the thermostat wire is not located in the meter box. Now what?

No worries, we have two simple solutions:

  1. Moving the thermostat wire to the meter box.
  2. Extend the cable from the gateway to the smart meter. With the application of a P1 port splitter, the distance between gateway and smart meter can be extended by an additional 6 meters per splitter.

Choose what best suits your situation. An installer can arrange this for you in no time, and for true do-it-yourselfers, it’s a small challenge with a big result. Be sure to check out the frequently asked questions below with tips for extending cables.

With Anna P1, it still remains: smart, sustainable and … almost completely effortless!

Read your smart meter.

With Anna P1, you have all the functions of the Smile P1 in the Anna. Real-time data lets you see how much energy you are using and what your solar panels are generating – at any time of day.

Historical graphs show trends in your consumption and generation. Find out when you generate the most, when you consume the most, and how to use your energy smarter.

Works with all heat pumps.

Anna P1 is ideal for homes with heat pumps. Heat pumps run on electricity, which makes them perfect for integration with solar power. The Anna P1 matches the operation of your heat pump to your power generation, regardless of the brand.

Anna P1 is connected via OpenTherm or On/Off (Max 24/1A). If your heat pump has a 230V On/Off contact you may need the Relay Box 5V to connect Anna P1.

For users of the Thercon Thermastage, Anna P1 offers additional integration. Excess solar energy can be used automatically via the boost function to generate hot tap water. This increases the efficiency of your system and utilizes your energy optimally.

Frequently asked questions

How do I extend the thermostat cable?

The thermostat cable should be a maximum of 50 meters with a maximum of 5 ohm weather resistance. A 2×0.6mm² or 2×0.8mm² hard-core cable is usually used for this purpose. Extending the thermostat wire is a lot easier and cheaper than extending the P1 cable in most situations.

How do I extend the P1 cable?

There are several ways to extend the P1 cable:

  • P1 splitter: Insert the cable from the Anna P1 into this. Then plug an extension cable into the second port. This allows you to extend the cable up to 6 meters per splitter.
  • P1 extension module: An extension module uses an RJ45 cable. This allows you to extend the cable up to 100 meters.

The various components are available from the following providers:

Is there also a link to a home battery?

No, there is no connection to a home battery. Anna can only perform an action through the cable to the heat source. That is via an OpenTherm or On/Off signal (max 24V).

What is the difference between the Anna and the Anna P1?

The Anna P1 is similar to the Anna smart thermostat, but with the functionality of the Smile P1 directly integrated. This means you no longer need a separate Smile P1 to use energy data from the smart meter. Because the functionality of the Smile P1 is already in the Anna P1, less hardware is needed. This makes the system easier to install and clearer to use.
